How do you find the best tech company for your career? It all depends on how you define "best." Are you looking for a company that offers great perks? Are you planning to start a family and want to work for an employer that is friendly toward new parents? Do you want to work for a large company or one that is experiencing a high rate of growth? Is diversity important to you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you will find what you are looking for here. We scoured list after list of "Best Companies to Work For" to find ones in the tech industry that fit at least one or two of these criteria. Many of them appeared on several lists.

Alphabet (Parent Company of Google)

Alphabet is the parent company of Google and its subsidiaries including YouTube and Chrome. Alphabet's headquarters are in Mountain View, California, but the company has offices around the United States and the world. 

This company seems to fulfill the desires of everyone looking for a satisfying career. Parents will find adequate parental leave and childcare. People of color will find a welcoming workplace. Everyone can enjoy the many perks this company offers, both small and large.

Employees can ride bikes and have the opportunity to pursue passion projects. One benefit that stands out is the support given to surviving partners of employees who die while working for Google. They will receive half of their partners' salaries for a decade.

Facebook

With monthly users in the billions, Facebook is one of the most popular websites out there. It is also a highly desirable employer, as its high ranking on these lists indicate. What draws people to this company's Menlo Park, California headquarters or one of its other locations in the U.S. or around the world?

The most coveted perks of working for Facebook are the social media trendsetter's family-friendly policies. They include 17 weeks of parental leave plus $4,000 in cash for new parents. Those who have trouble conceiving receive financial help with fertility treatments or adoption assistance.

When Netflix began in 1997, the company delivered DVDs to subscribers by snail mail. Now its name is synonymous with binge-watching, as it streams digital recordings of movies and tv shows via computers, phones, smart TVs, and other devices. It even produces original series and movies. Based in Los Gatos, California, Netflix also has offices in Los Angeles; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Amsterdam; Tokyo; and Mumbai, India.

An incredibly generous parental leave policy is available—up to one year off with the ability to work part or full-time as desired during that time. Employees may take vacation time at their discretion.

Although it's not nearly as much of a household name as Google or Facebook—not even close—Salesforce.com's excellent reputation with techies is evidenced by its appearance on these lists. Self-described as "the world’s #1 Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform," the company is based in San Francisco but has offices all over the country and around the world.

According to the Salesforce.com website, equality is a core company value. Another one is Ohana, which in Hawaiian culture means family. The company, since CEO Marc Benioff founded it in 1999, has fostered the concept that "families are bound together, and that family members are responsible for one another." This supportive environment makes it a very appealing place to work.

Workday

Workday provides cloud applications for finance and human resources. It is less well-known to the public than most of the companies on this list, but it has much to offer employees who are looking for a great place to work in the IT industry. Workday's headquarters are in Pleasanton, California, but jobs are located around the U.S. and the world.

This company prides itself on its "employee-first" culture. It has joined other employers in pledges that promote workplace diversity including President Barack Obama's White House Equal Pay Pledge, the Business Statement for Transgender Equality, and the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge.

VMWare

VMWare provides cloud and virtualization software. It is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, but has offices in other states and countries.

VMWare stresses the concept of "VMInclusion." A statement on the company website says "we actively attract, engage and celebrate our people from a wide variety of dynamic backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By doing so, we foster a culture that’s welcoming and supportive..."

What makes it desirable to new parents is its very very generous leave policy and a monetary gift for all newborns. Family leave can be used to care for a newborn, foster child, or ill relative.

LinkedIn was launched in 2002 as a social media site for professional networking. Company headquarters are in Sunnyvale, California, and offices can be found around the world. Microsoft purchased the company in 2016.

Making connections is in this company's DNA. LinkedIn regularly hosts employee-centered events that encourage coworkers from all different backgrounds to get to know each other on a personal level. This inclusive environment helped it earn a diversity score of 80 out of 100 from Comparably, publisher of The 10 Companies Rated Highest By Employees of Color.

LinkedIn's dedication to helping employees have healthy lifestyles contributes to its appeal. Onsite fitness centers that offer a full roster of classes and a monetary allowance they can use for gym memberships and massages make it very desirable to those who want to work in the tech industry.

Pinterest

People use Pinterest, one of three social networks on this list, to collect recipes, decorating tips, travel advice, and ideas and inspiration for whatever interests them. The site launched in 2010.

Employees love Pinterest's generous parental leave policy that gives workers up to three months of paid time off, an additional month of part-time hours, and two counseling sessions to help ease them through the transition.

Microsoft

Microsoft came into being in 1975. Along with IBM, Intel, and Apple, it is among the founders of the modern tech industry. Its headquarters are in Redmond, Washington.

The company offers innovative parent-friendly policies that belie its age. For example, Microsoft hosts an annual adoption fair and helps parents who pursue this option pay related fees. Microsoft also subsidizes childcare and even assists workers in finding backups if their regular providers are ill. Parental leave policies are generous as well.

Apple

Founded in 1976, this tech industry pioneer continues to introduce new products and improve on established ones. It is based in Cupertino, California and has offices worldwide,

One reason workers love this employer is that they own it...at least in part. A benefit of working for Apple is the stock grants that allow employees to buy into the company.
